Spanish Clay Tile Roofing
Roofing tiles made from clay are referred to as Spanish Roofing Tiles. Some Spanish roofing tiles are still manufactured in Mexico and others such as US Tile are manufactured locally in southern California.
One example of roof tile made in Mexico would be Redland Clay Tile and examples of clay roof tile made in the United States would US Tile by Boral or Deleo.
What makes Spanish tile roofs so difficult to work on?
Cement tile roofs are comprised of only two types of tiles. One is called a field tile that covers most of the roof and then they are the trim tiles that are installed on the ridges and sides of the roofs.
Clay tile roofs have a much more complicated design. You may have to have a special edge tile referred to as “bird stops”.
Bird stop tiles must be perfectly place at the bottom edge of the roof. If not properly spaced your rows will not be straight.
Each bird stop must be measured for placement with little room for error.
The only way to repair in improperly placed bird stop is to remove the whole entire section of roofing.
Orange County Tile Roof Repairs
Unlike cement tile roofs which are traditionally a “one-piece” design, clay tile roofs can be either one or multiple pieces per square foot.
One example of this type of clay or Spanish tile roof would a technique of using a combination of a two-piece starter with bird stops going into a one-piece field tile.
This would give the roof edge a traditional two-piece look without the expense of installing two pieces of tile all over the roof. This is a technique that must be taught to a roofer and practiced for many hours before someone can master this.
Another critical part of a clay tile roof is the mortar. Mortar is both aesthetic and purposely used to keep or block water from getting under the roof tiles.
Mastering the technique of mixing, carrying, and placing mortar under field tiles is a skill your roofer will need when repairing your traditional clay tile roof.
If mortar work is not done properly it will stand out like a sore thumb to a skilled clay tile roofer and can be easily detected by the homeowner.
The above examples show how clay tile roofs are both more complicated and time consuming to repair than your traditional cement tile roof.
